How Should the Laser Lens Be Cleaned and Maintained

In the laser cutting machine optical system, the laser lens is a consumable item. In order to reduce the cost of use as much as possible, we should strictly follow this specification to clean the lenses. In the process of cleaning and replacing, laser lenses should be placed, tested and installed with care to avoid making the lenses contaminated or damaged as much as possible. After the installation of new lenses, the protective lenses should be checked regularly and cleaned in time.

 

Daily preventive measures

1. before dismantling the laser lens, should ensure that the cutting head laser lens window around clean, and not have a fan blowing in the direction of the cutting head, so as not to remove the laser lens when the airflow will bring dust into the cutting head inside, resulting in internal pollution.

2. do not install the laser lens with bare fingers, but wear powder-free finger covers or rubber/latex gloves.

3. should not touch the film layer and mirror when taking the laser lens, should hold the edge of the laser lens and place the laser lens on the wipe paper

4. should avoid talking over the laser lens and keep all contaminants away from the working environment as much as possible.

5. try to operate in a dust-free environment when cleaning laser lenses (cleaning agents such as anhydrous ethanol will only dissolve the dirt and will not cause damage to the lenses).

How Should  the Laser Lens Be Cleaned and Maintained


Cleaning accessories

 

Step 1

Flexible cleaning of lightly contaminated (dust, fiber particles) laser lenses
Blow off any contaminants scattered on the surface of the laser lens with a blowing airbag or cleaning air. If this step does not remove the contamination, continue with step 2.
Note: Avoid using shop air ducts as they often contain high levels of oil and water. These contaminants can form a harmful absorption layer on the laser lens surface.

 

Step 2

Flexible cleaning of lightly contaminated (stains, fingerprints) laser lenses
Moisten a special unused cotton swab with a cleaning agent such as acetone or anhydrous ethanol and gently wipe the laser lens surface (do not rub hard), dragging the wet swab slowly over the laser lens surface so that the liquid left behind the swab evaporates just immediately. This will leave no trace. If this step does not remove the contaminant, continue with step 3.
Note: Use only pure paper swabs (Q-tip swabs are recommended) or polyester swabs with reagent grade cleaners such as acetone and anhydrous ethanol).

 

Step 3

For moderate cleaning of moderately contaminated (saliva, oil) laser lenses moisten an unused swab with 6% distilled white vinegar and wipe the lens surface with light pressure, wipe off excess distilled vinegar from the lens surface with a clean dry swab, followed by gently wiping the lens surface with a swab moistened with acetone to remove all acetic acid. If this step does not remove the contaminant, continue.

 

Step 4

Power clean heavily contaminated (splattered) laser lenses. Highly contaminated or dirty lenses may require the use of an optical polishing solution to remove contaminants from the lens surface.

 

1. Shake the polishing solution container well before use. Pour out four to five drops of polishing solution and place them on a cotton ball. On the surface of the laser lens to be cleaned, use the weight of the cotton ball to gently move the ball in a circular motion (do not press the ball!) Do not over polish in one direction, but keep rotating the lens. The time spent cleaning the laser lens should not exceed half a minute. If, during this step, you notice a change in the color of the laser lens surface, it means that the outer layer of the laser lens film is corroded and you should stop cleaning immediately.

 

2. After using the polishing solution, moisten an unused cotton swab with distilled water and gently wipe the laser lens surface with it, thoroughly wetting the laser lens surface and removing as much polishing solution residue as possible. Do not allow the laser lens surface to become dry. This will make it more difficult to remove the polish residue.

 

3. Quickly moisten a lint-tipped swab with anhydrous ethanol and use it to gently clean the laser lens surface thoroughly. Cover the entire surface with the head of the swab to remove as much polish residue as possible.

 

4. Wet a lint-tipped swab with acetone and use it to clean the laser lens surface to remove any anhydrous ethanol and polishing solution residue left behind during the cleaning process. When doing the final cleaning with acetone, gently drag the swab over the surface of the laser lens, wiping away any traces left until the entire surface has been wiped clean. Make a final wiping motion with the swab, moving it slowly to ensure that the surface behind the swab dries immediately, which will eliminate surface streaks. Certain types of contamination or damage (e.g., metal spatters, pits, etc.) cannot be removed. If the laser lens surface is contaminated or damaged as described above and cannot be cleaned and restored, the cleaning should be abandoned and replaced with a new laser lens to ensure the quality of the cut.
